Having a lifelong affinity for capturing moments through the lens, Margaret Bailey not only actively captures the present moment but also manipulates personal photo archives to delve into her own past and the past of her community on the Westside of Colorado Springs. Working with images taken by her as well as images captured by family or people within her community she explores the ephemerality and unreliability of memory. By drawing over images she addresses the temporary nature of childhood and how overtime vivid memories begin to fade, eventually leaving gaps in their place. Collaging and layering images brings forward more questions of how memory is changed as it is retold and how the perception of the past changes between generations.
Margaret was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Having always been drawn to creating art, she decided to pursue her Bachelor’s in Visual Art at UCCS which she aims to complete in the summer of 2025. Her practice encompasses painting, printmaking, illustration and photography. Her work has been featured in the GOCA Project Space in the exhibition “Momento”, as well the showcase event “# of Flesh” at Colorado College’s Fine Arts Center. She currently works as a Gallery Assistant at GOCA and serves as a member of their advisory council, in addition to being a student representative on the FEARS committee for UCCS. Her work will next be featured at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Gallery in the upcoming exhibition “insert whatever title we decide here”. Margaret hopes to continue her journey in the art world by pursuing an MFA in the next few years.
